2011 – The Kitchen

I am 31 years old, and I am dating again. I had just gotten home from buying groceries. The kid’s hadn’t gotten off the bus yet, but they would soon, so I started a pot of homemade soup on the stove while unpacking the groceries from the grocery bags.

The canned foods were all out on the countertops and the cabinet doors were open from me being in the middle of putting the cabinet food away when my boyfriend knocked on the door and I went to let him in.

He followed me back to the kitchen where there was opened cabinets, canned goods on the counter, and soup simmering on the stove. He saw all this and asked if I needed help putting the food away and I said no.

He had gotten paid that day and asked me to sit down with him and look at his paycheck stub because it didn’t seem correct to him. So we sat down at the kitchen table beside each other, with our backs facing the main area of the kitchen.

We discussed his paycheck stub for a few mins when I remembered the soup simmering on the stove and said “let me check the soup right quick”. With that, I stood up and turned around facing the main kitchen area. I was stunned and frozen. He noticed and turned around too.

All of the canned goods, dry food, and grocery bags that were out on the counter were gone. All of the opened cabinet doors were now closed. We looked at each other shocked. I walked over to the cabinets and opened them. All of the food that was out on the countertops was now inside the cabinets. The countertop was completely clear and the chore of putting the food away had been completed…while we sat at the kitchen table talking.

Discussing this several times over the years he has described it as a time glitch. Like something felt “off” to him. He felt as though time stopped while were were talking.

    1. Looking back now, it does feel that way, even tho at the time I was a little too frazzled to appreciate it.
