What’s Lost Is Found

This entry is about my oldest adult daughter (shared here with her permission).

Back in February of this year, she lost her wallet. She was at a coffee/ice cream shop with her friend’s toddler child when she remembered last having it.

Thinking maybe she put it in the child’s diaper bag, she texts her friend….

After a while of it not turning up anywhere, she mentions to me she lost it. Of course, I did my mom thing and fussed at her for being out here in the world without her Drivers License.

Over the next several months I would bring it up again, and she still had no DL 🙄.

By this time, it’s July, and I get this text from her….

So the missing wallet is right there in the open console of her car after being missing for 5 months.

Then today, I get this text from her.

At this point in our lives we don’t really update each other over every little weird thing, until it becomes several weird things worth mentioning.

Now, this could all be written off as simply misplacing things and then finding them again when you’re not even looking for them. It happens.

But there are levels to this sort of thing.

A pair of prescription glasses you ‘misplaced’ aren’t just going to be sitting in the middle of your couch cushion, unnoticed, in the wide open for 2 weeks.

Now, these are her experiences, as a young adult with her husband, living in their first home.

I, on the other hand, am 44 years old and this has happened to me so many times that I don’t even keep up with it anymore.

I’m not exactly sure what it is .

But I know what it’s not.

It’s not a one-off glitch.

I’d love to hear from the folks out there that this happens to on a very regular basis. And what do you make of it?

  1. i plan on leaving a comment with more of my thoughts at the very end of reading all stories, but this one resonates so well i have to stop and say something.

this has happened to my family forever, as long as i can remember. split households, my dad called it the house fairies, and my mom had some weird name i cant recall right now. my dad has always said “the house fairies are just messing with you/me”.

it happens to me OFTEN. more than that, it happens to grounding items. i vape, so my vape is in my hand/lap/pocket/bag nearly 24/7. its covered in very bright stickers so hard to lose. ill have it in my lap sitting somewhere, open my phone, then look to grab it and its gone. so i search everywhere all over the whole house. 20m-1hr will pass and ill give up deciding the house fairies will return it, low and behold its sitting right where i was. i know i searched there. the mouse to my laptop, my wallet, my sketchbook, MY FAVORITE PEN. lost my favorite pen, cleaned my room atleast a dozen times in-between losing it. cleaned it last night and it was on my floor. in a spot nothing ever even piles up.

sorry for the long comment, this one just hits close. the asking for it thing never worked for me though, its always been more like something is playing a joke. when i give up and accept it the fairies return it.

  2. I read this a lot. all over the internet. I lost things and they were never returned.

During Lockdown, I was using 2 debit cards to shop with. ONLY these 2 and they were always on my desk upstairs where I worked.

I went to use one and couldn’t find it, so I though I would use the other temporarily until found the first one, couldn’t find that one either.

We turned the house upside, down, my son, my then husband and me. We lifted things, shook books, checked every single item. Checked the fridge, people are known to do crazy things like put trainers in there or car keys. Checked the vaccum cleaner. We pulled all the cushions off the sofa, pulled the sofa out and checked the floor behind, checked under the sofa.

    Nothing. I ordered new cards.

a few days after the new cards arrived, we pulled out the sofa to hoover behind it (boredom in lockdown), there pushed hard against the wall, flat on the floor nicely placed next to each other, were both my cards! We looked here, we looked here multiple times even though my cards had always been upstairs.

I have lost other things and they have never been returned to me.

    1. If I read something or someone ever makes a suggestion for how they recover things, I’ll be sure to come back here and share it with you. I think it would drive me more crazy if the things didn’t just reappear.

I never thought of this until I read your story. One day I went to the massage therapist, of course I take my glasses off while getting a massage. I can see to drive without my glasses, I only really need them to see close up. I arrive home and realize my glasses aren’t on my face. I look for them everywhere in my car. I call the business and am telling them I left my glasses there, then I touch my face and they are on my face. It was the weirdest experience I’ve ever had.

    1. The missing glasses struggle is real 😅 they just zap out of sight and zap right back. But…on your face?! That’s wild!

  4. I lived with a friend in an old farmhouse where these things would happen regularly. Items would disappear then reappear quite often… in places where we’ve definitely looked, or in very odd places where nobody would have put them. we would put it down to previous inhabitants of the house. My friend seemed to attract these occurrences his whole life. Sounds like you are the same.

    1. It’s such an ongoing thing that I don’t even bother myself over it anymore. My daughter tho, it drives her bonkers because she just HAS to find it. I guess older age just makes me reserve my energy a little more 😅

Hi! I found your blog post from the matrix mysteries Facebook page. I was so enthralled that I stayed up until 4 AM reading every single post. 🤪 This one stuck out to me the most because this happens to me and my fiancé all the time at my house. The very first time it happened to us my fiancé was on the garage building storage shelves. He came inside asking if I had seen his hammer? I was like uhh no? He’s like I can’t find it anywhere and I just had it! So I’m thinking okay – typical man 😝 I’ll go find it. We go outside to the garage – no hammer anywhere and we searched high and low. So I’m thinking maybe he took it inside? So we look inside – again no hammer. So we walk back out the garage and I kid you not it’s laying in the MIDDLE of the garage floor. Like in the most obvious place – not somewhere we could have “missed” .. it scared him really bad he started yelling “no! No way!” We call them the Borrowers in our house now. Anyways I wanted to comment on this one because it’s also happened to me specifically with my glasses and my wallet just like your daughter. Usually now I ask for them to bring it back but when it first started happening I would just wait for things to show back up and they always would in the most OBVIOUS of places that there is no way I hadn’t checked 1,000 times before. Thanks for creating this blog – I look forward to reading more posts and hearing more about the two (or more!) Yous!!

    2. 4am?! I’m way too cranky to pull that off. 😩😂 And yep, it’s exactly like this. It’s so strange to me that all of us (that this happens to) describes it in the same way. Like even if the items or circumstances are all different…the manner in which the things just disappear and then reappear later, is always the same!
